CPATA is seeking expressions of interest to fill 3 positions (1 licensee and 2 non-licensees) on its Discipline Committee.
The Discipline Committee supports CPATA’s public protection mandate by hearing applications referred by the Investigations Committee and adjudicating complaints of professional misconduct and/or incompetence.
CPATA is seeking individuals and professionals with a high level of integrity, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, experienced in professional regulation, and with an interest in acquiring skills for, or familiarity with adjudication of complaints against licensees, gained through experiences in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors. The successful candidates will have knowledge of and/or experience with collaborative decision making, Codes of Conduct for regulated professionals, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work in a digital environment, and will possess a strong work ethic.
Seeking
- One patent agent and/or trademark agent
- Two non-licensees
Specific Knowledge, Skills, Attributes and Experience
- Experience in professional regulation required
- Knowledge of administrative law principles an asset
- Adjudicative experience an asset
- Bilingual (English/French) – preferred
Member tasks
- Attend meetings of the Discipline Committee as a whole
- Engage in professional development and orientation training as required
- Be available to participate as a hearing panelist on request
- Hear applications from the Investigations Committee in accordance with principles of fairness and committee policies and procedures
- Recommend revisions to by-laws, and develop and implement policies and procedures as needed to support an efficient, effective, fair, transparent, consistent and accountable adjudication process
Time Commitment
- The Committee meets as a whole about 3 times each year for about 2 hours, with longer meetings when training is provided
- The number of hearings is unknown in any year, but averages 2 – 3: some are short hearings to consider settlement proposals and others are longer contested hearings
Mandate Start Date and Duration
- Appointments are for 2-year terms, with the possibility of reappointment for 2 further periods of 2 years each, for a total of 6 years
- Appointment expected Fall 2026 to take effect January 2027

In accordance with Schedule 2 of CPATA’s By-laws
Other Information
Appointment to the Discipline Committee does not guarantee serving on a Discipline Panel for a hearing in any particular year. The Committee Chair is responsible for appointing members to panels in accordance with policy on appointment.
