CPATA Publishes its Inaugural Annual Report

CPATA’s first ever Annual Report is now available online

2021 was a groundbreaking first year of operation for the College. Since the enactment of the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents Act in 2018, we have been busy building a transparent, comprehensive regulatory framework and infrastructure for the profession. With CPATA’s coming-into-force this past June, we are advancing our important work protecting the public interest, strengthening agent competencies, building confidence in IP services, driving innovation and stimulating economic growth in Canada.

The Annual Report outlines the emergence of a unique, national regulator committed to modern and world-class right-touch regulation. CPATA is proud of its key accomplishments:

  • Built a transparent, comprehensive regulatory framework and infrastructure for the profession;
  • Began setting competence standards for the profession and administering entry requirements that reflect those standards;
  • Implemented the Code of Professional Conduct established by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry;
  • Created a fair and open process to respond to concerns about the competence or conduct of agents; and,
  • Set requirements for professional liability insurance for licensees.

“2021 marked a historical moment in intellectual property in Canada with the coming-into-force of CPATA. For creators and innovators, agents and investors, governments and all Canadians, the College represents the protection and promotion of the public interest and a key force in Canada’s innovation ecosystem.”

Tom Conway, Chair, Board of Directors

As CPATA looks ahead, we will continue to bring a standard of excellence to the training and testing of Canada’s patent agents and trademark agents. Our work will help build confidence in intellectual property professionals and the services they provide. We will play our part in building a culture of innovation and catalyzing Canada’s economic strength.
