Ruth McHugh is a professional accountant, a recognized FCPA, and holds an MBA from Edinburgh, Scotland. Ruth also holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and the iGP from the Council of Canadian Innovators Innovation Governance Program.<\/p>

Ruth has held C-Suite roles in the public, private, and not for profit sectors. Now in private practice, Ruth previously led executive oversight of Alberta\u2019s Legislative Assembly Office and has served as Chief Operating Officer for the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta.<\/p>

Amber Batool is an Executive Director, Global Investment Banking at CIBC.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her previous role as Vice-President at Sustainable Development Technology Canada
(SDTC), she led on the first published intellectual property strategy for the organization;
Amber also designed and led workshops for SDTC funded entrepreneurs on
developing their intellectual property strategies. She has deep networks in the
intellectual property community, and has presented at many events, including at
the Canadian Intellectual Property Office\u2019s conference. Amber has been a member
of CPATAs Governance Committee since 2022.<\/p>\n

Amber has held executive level positions in the public and private sector. In the UK she
worked for the Prime Minister\u2019s Strategy Unit, the Cabinet Office and the HM
Treasury during the 2008 financial crisis. Amber was Chief of Staff to several
Cabinet Ministers and was speechwriter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. She
also supported the Prime Minister\u2019s office in briefing the Prime Minister for
Question Period.<\/p>\n

Karima Bawa is a senior fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). Her research focuses on issues surrounding the commercialization of university research and development and capacity building in intellectual property (IP) strategy for Canadian innovators.
For the past several years, Ms. Bawa has been involved in various initiatives designed to help organizations better protect and leverage their IP rights. Most recently, she joined the Standards Council of Canada Technical Committee as an expert, representing Canada\u2019s interests for the forthcoming IP Management Standard (ISO 50505). Ms. Bawa advises and supports technology start-ups and scale-ups.<\/p>

Before her role at CIGI, Ms. Bawa was the chief legal officer and general counsel at Research In Motion (BlackBerry). In the 12 years she served at Research In Motion, she was a member of the senior leadership team and oversaw a global legal team. She was also a member of various strategic and operational senior management committees.<\/p>

Ms. Bawa is a graduate of Simon Fraser University\u2019s Executive MBA program and BSc program. She also obtained a law degree from the University of British Columbia and is a graduate of the ICD-Rotman Directors Education Program.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Thomas G. Conway is a partner at Conway Baxter Wilson LLP, a law firm based in Ottawa, Ontario. Mr. Conway has practised litigation for 30 years and is recognized by his peers as a leading practitioner in corporate and commercial litigation.<\/p>

From 2012 to 2014, Mr. Conway served as treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario, the highest elected office of the largest regulator of the legal professions in Canada. He led several important regulatory initiatives during his tenure at the Law Society. In 2014\u20132015, he served as president of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the umbrella organization of Canada\u2019s 14 provincial and territorial regulators.<\/p>

Mr. Conway is an honorary member of the law societies of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. With more than 35 years of professional experience, he brings a cross-border perspective to intellectual property law, grounded in both private practice and in-house roles.<\/p>

Dennis began his career as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), an experience that informs his practical, systems-level approach to patent prosecution. His practice spans a wide range of technologies, including telecommunications, biomedical devices, electronics, and mechanical systems.<\/p>

He has successfully guided innovators\u2014from start-ups to multinationals\u2014through complex patent portfolios and is directly licensed to prosecute applications before both the Canadian and U.S. patent offices. He also advises on global IP strategy and industrial design protection.<\/p>

Dennis holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio University and a Juris Doctor with a focus in Intellectual Property Law from the Franklin Pierce School of Law within the University of New Hampshire. Steven is a patent agent and lawyer at Smart & Biggar, where he is a Principal Counsel and previously served as the firm\u2019s Managing Partner. He has over 30 years of trial and appellate experience. He has litigated on matters relating to patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs, trade secrets, breach of confidential information, and competition law. In respect of patents, Steven has acted in matters that have involved a wide variety of subjects, including chemical, electrical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, telephony, mechanical and computer\/internet subject matter.\u00a0<\/p>

Steven is a Past President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) Canadian Group, and a Past President of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa Law School, where he teaches patent law. Steven is a regular writer and lecturer on intellectual property matters, both in Canada and internationally. He is also a member of the editorial board of the international publication Intellectual Property Magazine.
