Licence Renewal: February 18 - March 31, 2026<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Licence renewal for all licensees (Class 1, 2, 3 and 4, but not foreign practitioners who will renew later in the year) will take place between February 18 \u2013 March 31, 2026. Licences will remain active until that date.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Licensees should log in to the Licensee Portal<\/strong><\/a> now and make sure their personal information is up-to-date<\/a>, especially the primary e-mail address and employer information<\/strong>. CPATA will communicate full instructions for renewal to licensees\u2019 primary email address in the new year.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CPATA\u2019s By-laws require every fee to be adjusted (increased or decreased) on January 1 by the percentage change in the October All-items Consumer Price Index for Canada. The October All-items CPI was published on November 17th and is an increase of 2.2% from October 2024. Accordingly, all CPATA fees, including for licence issuance or renewal, foreign practitioner registration, applications, class changes and exams for 2026 have been adjusted by 2.2%.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CPATA\u2019s By-laws require that CPATA collect certain demographic and practice information and declarations annually from licensees. Licensees must provide up-to-date insurance information to CPATA and will be prompted to report on insurance during the annual licence renewal process.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bulk payment is available for firms paying for 5 licensees or more. Licensees must first log into their Licensee Portal account to complete the renewal steps, including the Annual Licensee Report. Once this is done, the status of their renewal is set to \u201cSubmitted\u201d. Firm representatives must then fill out a form (available in early 2026) and submit it to\u202fpayments-paiements@cpata-cabamc.ca<\/a> by March 21 to avoid processing delays.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CPATA\u2019s Licence Classes <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Class 1<\/strong> licensees have full practice rights, including presenting and prosecuting before CIPO.<\/p>

Class 2<\/strong> licensees have restricted practise rights. This means that they can do everything that a Class 1 agent can do with the exception of presenting and prosecuting before CIPO.<\/p>

Class 3<\/strong> licensees are agents-in-training: an agent who is currently in training under the supervision of an approved Class 1 or Class 2 agent, or a representative of CIPO.\u00a0These licensees are permitted to appear before and communicate with CIPO with the guidance of their approved Training Supervisor.<\/p>

Class 4<\/strong> licensees are considered \u201cinactive\u201d or \u201cnon-practising\u201d, whether temporarily or permanently, and are not permitted to practise the competencies identified in the Technical Competency Profiles for Patent Agents and Trademark Agents<\/a> as agents or hold themselves out as an active, practising agent.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
